Chapter Three
Laura and Michael
Late in November, Laura Random gave a dinner for her friends. As she greeted her guests, in a golden velvet gown, she clearly had mischief in mind. Her husband had departed that morning for a month-long climbing trip in the Andes, and a month is a very long time.
Michael Flagg arrived alone. His wife, Damaris, was also out of town. He was loath to admit that she’d left him and had already been gone for a week. He knew that she’d gone to L.A. and suspected that whatever she was doing there would not be something she would tell of on a postcard. He had made her mad and she was Latin.
Marguerite Alexander, glamorous in a blue suede bustier gown, bristled at the warmth with which Laura greeted Michael. Marguerite had known for months that Laura coveted Detective Flagg and this intuition made her very cross.
Hugo Sands’ companion, Jane Eliot, was similarly distressed by the affection with which Laura greeted Hugo. Hugo and Jane had been intimate for some months, but the soft manner in which Hugo embraced Laura, gave Jane a sinking feeling.
Naturally, Hugo was delighted to hear that William Random would shortly be perilously roped to a small climbing team on a windy Peruvian peak. Although it had been over a year since Hugo had made love to Laura at his Halloween party, the enigmatic brunette had never been far from his mind. With her husband out of town, Hugo’s path was clear, providing Flagg didn’t block his campaign.
When, toward the end of dinner, Laura casually announced that Michael’s absent wife Damaris had called her from California that afternoon, the strikingly attractive law enforcement officer went red in the face the way only a Celt can.
“She working at a B&D club,” Laura went on to say; “In Hollywood!”
For seven seconds no one spoke. Then Michael, who was furious at Laura for bringing up this awkward subject in company, conversationally replied, “She’s just saying that to get attention.”
“You think so?” Laura rejoined.
“Yes,” Michael replied firmly, intimidating Laura into lowering her eyes.
“Michael, has your bride left you? Already?” Jane was jubilant, as she had not yet completely forgiven Michael Flagg for breaking their engagement the previous year.
“No!” Michael snapped. “That is, maybe.”
“What’s a B&D club?” Jane wanted to know.
“You don’t need to know that,” Michael snapped emphatically.
Marguerite frowned, resenting the paternalistic tone Michael was taking with his ex, who by all accounts, was coming along nicely these days and never lectured anyone on the pernicious influence of sadomasochistic pornography anymore. It seemed both overbearing and unenlightened for Michael to attempt to shut Jane out of their world at this late date and Marguerite suddenly felt a strong desire to tell her hero off for it.
“I need to know whatever I want to know!” Jane delighted Marguerite by replying indignantly.
“Jane, I hope you’re not driving tonight because you’re well over the legal limit and I might have to arrest you,” Flagg informed her.
“You go to hell!” Jane advised
